Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island destroyed by hurricane Irma – Branson’s island, Necker Island, was nearly destroyed from the storm

Hurricane Irma has caused devastation throughout Florida and the Caribbean, including Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island. Branson tweeted last week that he intended to shelter himself and his staff from the storm by staying in his concrete wine cellar. Since then, he has been posting updates post-Hurricane Irma.

Branson is now raising money for other victims of Hurricane Irma through his company’s website,

Branson purchased the island in 1978 for just $ 180,000, allegedly to impress a woman. Eleven years later, that same woman, Joan Templeman, ended up becoming his wife. They currently live on Necker Island with their two children, Holly and Sam. The island was formerly available to be rented for $ 80,000 a night, accommodating up to 34 guests and 6 children.

Branson isn’t the only famous resident affected by Hurricane Irma. Ernest Hemingway’s former home in Key West was also hit by the storm. The six-toed cats who reside at the house, who are descendants of Hemingway’s own cats, along with an additional 20-25 non-polydactyl cats, and 10 employees, all took shelter inside the home, which proved to be Hurricane proof due to its 18-inch thick limestone walls.
