This modernist glass house in Amagansett came on the market in April of 2017 for $ 2.2 million, and after just over a year available for sale, has found a buyer and went into contract. Several price changes were made during its time on the market under Sotheby’s agent Rylan Jacka, but it was most recently listed for $ 1,895,000.
When we first featured the midcentury gem, our commenters were loving the house but weren’t crazy about the location. Though technically the Red Dirt Road property is in Amagansett, it’s closer to what locals consider to be East Hampton’s Springs neighborhood. Unfortunately, it’s not that close to the water; the closest ocean beach is Indian Wells, which is 3.5 miles south.
The restored 1,000-square-foot home was part of noted architect Richard Bender’s “Amenity” project in the early ’60s, which consisted of a collection of cottages on 20 acres of private land surrounded by woodlands. This particular house is covered in full-length glass all around, and, according to the listing, “evokes the sensory pleasure of living under a canopy with the surrounding nature flowing through the space.”
Interiors include two bedrooms, one full bathroom, one half-bath, aged pine flooring, beamed wood ceilings, oak cabinetry, a floating staircase, and an open floorplan. Outside, there’s mahogany decking, an outdoor shower, a freshwater pool, and views of the surrounding 160-acre nature reserve.
The sale hasn’t closed quite yet, so we’re unsure of what the house will finally sell for—but in 2012, the most recent owner purchased the property for $ 1.6 million.
